Before the Character Moves

A half-day follows one gesture from a line of narrative through performance, capture and animation, before the people behind the character sit down together.

The studio visit begins with a scene that has not yet become a game. On a wall are a few cleared storyboards; on a monitor, an unbranded grey figure waits in an empty room. The creative director asks the question that came before mechanics or rendering: what should the player feel in the second before this character decides to turn away?

In the capture space, a performer tries the movement three ways. One is quick and defensive, one deliberately unreadable, one carries the weight of a decision already made. Guests watch the data become a skeletal rig and then a rough animation. The team compares small changes in timing, shoulders and breath. Proprietary builds, unreleased characters and confidential screens remain closed unless the studio has cleared them expressly.

A narrative designer, animator or sound lead then opens the wider business of the scene: how a studio allocates attention, tests meaning with players and protects an original voice inside production realities. If an approved prototype is available, the guests play only a short passage, not to review it but to notice how writing, interface, sound and performance make one another legible.

Dinner is held away from screens. The studio's voices may join for the opening courses; wine, spirits or an alcohol-free pairing follow the food and guests rather than a gaming theme. Serica coordinates the studio, permissions, confidentiality, interpretation, transport and private table into a five-to-six-hour encounter.

Over dinner, the group returns to the three versions of the gesture and the production notes that survived clearance. The useful comparison is how writing, performance, animation and sound changed the same few seconds.

Created for you by Serica

Serica can shape the encounter around narrative design, animation, sound, motion capture or the business of independent game production. Studio access, participants, cleared material, recording and any hands-on element require prior permission. No title, intellectual property, preview build or named studio is implied until confirmed.

The host studio controls access, recording, cleared material and confidentiality throughout the visit.
