The Garden Before Candlelight
A half-day in Suzhou moves from a privately guided garden visit to Kunqu conversation and a seasonal dinner as daylight gives way to candles.

Guests are collected from their Suzhou hotel in mid-afternoon and enter the garden with a specialist host before public visiting pressure or evening fatigue takes over. The first hour follows framed views, water, thresholds and one seasonal planting rather than attempting a complete architectural survey. Tea and a short rest are built into the route before dinner.
As the white walls release the sun, the group reaches the courtyard where the table has been prepared. The first courses move from cooler, lighter flavours towards the warmth of the evening, using ingredients confirmed with the chef after allergies and preferences are known. Candles are introduced gradually; rain or temperature changes move the meal to an agreed interior without losing the garden connection.
Between courses, a Kunqu practitioner joins the table for a prepared conversation around one line of text. The performer first speaks it, then demonstrates how melody, breath and gesture alter its meaning. Bilingual interpretation supports the exchange, and the artist's participation, duration and photography boundaries are agreed in advance.
The visit and dinner together take roughly six hours. When the last course is cleared, private transport returns guests to their hotel while Serica settles the timing between garden, practitioner, kitchen and weather plan behind the scenes.
The evening leaves guests with a garden they have walked, a line they have heard at close range and a meal paced to the changing light.
